Update: April 6, 2020: The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook is now on sale for $999. You can purchase it online at Best Buy’s site or at Samsung’s site at the links below. It’s available in the standard Mercury Grey color as well as in the cool looking Fiesta Red color.
Original story: March 30, 2020: The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook impressed us a few months ago when we checked out a pre-release version in Las Vegas at CES 2020. Now this expensive Chrome OS device finally has a firm release date. The Galaxy Chromebook will go on sale April 6 in the US, via the BestBuy.com site and Samsung’s own site for $999.
That high price point is somewhat justified when you consider the hardware specs of this Chromebook. It has a 13.3-inch 4K (3,840 x 2,160) AMOLED touchscreen display, and it supports Ambient EQ, which adjusts the screen brightness and color temperature based on the surrounding lighting of the Chromebook. The display also flips around 360 degrees so you can use it in different modes, including tent and tablet modes.
Inside, the ultra-light 2.3-pound Chromebook has a 10th generation Intel core i5 processor, along with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. It’s also extremely thin at just 9.9mm. Some of the other hardware features include an embedded stylus, support for Wi-Fi 6, a 1MP front camera, an 8MP rear camera, and a backlit keyboard. The onboard 49.2Wh battery is supposed to last up to 8 hours on a single charge. Finally, this Chromebook will be sold in a “fiesta red” color that should stand out from the crowd of silver and grey notebooks. If you want a gray color version, the Chromebook will be available in that color as well.
It will be interesting to see how well the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook sells with its high price. Yes, the hardware inside is impressive, but so far, Chromebooks with such high end parts — including Google’s own Pixelbook lineup — have had limited sales success.
Will you be picking up the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook when it goes on sale next week?
