From motion blur to audio zoom, here’s what Google could soon bring to Pixels

Pixel 4 camera app

  • The latest version of the Google Camera app apparently contains references to upcoming features.
  • These features include flash intensity, motion blur, and audio zoom.
  • Google’s app also contains more references to the Pixel 4a 5G.

The Google Camera for Pixel phones is among the more polished camera apps, offering great daytime snaps thanks to HDR+ as well as low-light features like Night Sight and an astrophotography mode.

Now, 9to5Google has dug into version 7.5 of the app (found in the latest Android 11 beta) and uncovered a host of features possibly coming to Pixel phones. One of the more notable features spotted by the outlet is a “motion blur mode, which would appear alongside other camera modes. It’s believed that this could be used for photos of fast-moving subjects, presumably freezing the subject but blurring the background. This could be ideal for snaps of speeding cars, cyclists, and other similarly fast-moving subjects.

The second major feature uncovered is a flash intensity option, allowing users to adjust the strength of the phone’s flash. This could be handy for times when you just need a little more light for a shot rather than a scene-blinding flash. It’s unclear whether this option needs to be toggled before you take a shot or if you can adjust the flash intensity after the fact, akin to Nokia’s legacy Rich Capture functionality.

Two more features discovered by 9to5Google are audio zoom and improved social share functionality. “Boost the sound where the user is zooming in on, reads a string of text for the former feature, echoing audio zoom features from the likes of HTC and LG. Google previously added audio zoom support to Android 10, but it’s not clear whether its own take requires special hardware.

Google has implemented a social share feature before, giving users a quick-fire way to share photos to various services via the camera app. However, the latest references suggest that you can now share videos via this method too.

The new Google Camera app also seems to contain references to the Pixel 4a 5G, corroborating previous leaks and references. Hopefully Google offers more than just 5G connectivity in the new phone.
